USA: massive protest against george w. bush
Compaņer@s,
All across the US yesterday there were massive demos against the
inauguration of George W. Bush as president. Tens of thousands turned out in Washington,
DC, blocking and throwing eggs at the line of limousines bringing Bush and
henchmen to the White House. The demo was about as large as A16 against the
IMF/WB.
In Portland, 400 people rallied, chanted, drummed, danced, and sang downtown
in one of the liveliest demonstrations we've had since Mayday 2000. People
across the country are _outraged_ about this last election, and the process in
general. Never before have so many people taken part in protesting an
inauguration.
After the main rally, we marched to Niketown to deliver a petition
supporting striking workers in Mexico, whom the Mexican riot police have been
attacking. We shut down Nike for the day.
Next, we marched through the streets in force toward "The Oregonian," the
local mouthpiece of the corporate media, to protest its propagandized coverage
of a "joint terrorism task force" between the local police and the Federal
Bureau of Investigations. They're in town for no reason other than to spy on
activists.
The crowd then passed Niketown again and dispersed without incident in the
main plaza downtown. We vowed to redouble our commitment to offset the effect
of Bush being in office (it is almost better to have a true enemy than a
"false friend" as president).
