The Intercontinental Project Berlin (Germany)
The Intercontinental Project was founded as a students working group on economics and was for instance active against the MAI (Multilateral Agreement on Investment). The project has been working together with other groups and organisations ever since, especially against racism and social cuts and in solidarity with the Zapatistas. Together with many others we participated in the preparation of the action days against the residential obligation law in Germany, which restricts freedom of movement for refugees. We have been preparing small booklets with background information on Global Action Days, for example on the WTO on November 30th 1999, on the IMF/ World Bank in Prague 2000 and on the G8 in Genoa 2001. We emphasize the link between summit events and local struggles and are continously involved in preparing actions and seminars in Berlin as well. A very successful seminar was organised by the womens' group Schall und Rauch in February 2001 on Globalisation and Resistance with an excellent lecture on the role of the state in capitalism.
European Network of the Marches against Unemployment, Precarity and Social Exclusion (Euromarches) (Germany)
The network of the European Marches against Unemployment, Precarity and Social Exclusion is not an organization but a network of different groups and initiatives which are fighting the unsocial results of globalisation and deregulation as unemployment, insecure jobs and any kind of discrimintaion. It has no fixed organizational structures but regulary coordinating meetings on national or European level. The initial activities startet in 1997 with organizing the Amsterdam demonstration. Since than twice every year Euromarches organizes together with trade unions or other progressive forces demonstrations and other activities of protest in connection with governement top meetings of the European Union. Highlights were the demonstrations 1999 in Cologne and 2000 in Nice. Euromarch is right now actively involved in the preparation of the campaign of protests against the G8-meeting in July in Genova. We are campaigning for a garantued minima income and preparing a conference on European level in December in Brussels. We participated in the Milan pga meeting in May.
Vrienden van GroenFront! (Netherlands)
(GroenFront! / EarthFirst! Netherlands Support Group)
GroenFront! is a loose, decentralised network of anarchists, squatters and otherwise ecologically and socially involved activists. Ideological commons are biocentricity, anti-authoritarianism and egalitarianism.
GroenFront! is a label for any nonviolent direct action with a background of these beliefs. Thus there is no central organisation or common strategy to determine which actions take place. There is a similar, 'sisterlabel' for antimilitarist and -nuclear direct action called "Onkruit Vergaat Niet" (translation quite impossible).
Direct action is seen as any non-authoritarian act that directly halts environmental and social destruction, or builds new social and environmental structures. We do not believe in gaining power either within capitalist structures or in an alternative kind of structuralism to influence politics. We feel anticapitalist, ecological and anti-authoritarian consciousness revives in the direct act. Thus though blockades and occupations are mostly temporary and and may thus seem symbolic, the direct act of resistance can encourage self-liberation in many people, such as local 'victims' of for example infrastructure projects who we try to involve in actions. From a pragmatic point of view, the financial burden that can be caused by repetitive direct action can be more succesful then lobby.
Nonviolence is for some a principle, for others a tactic. Destruction of property is not condoned but preferred to take place under another label for pragmatic purposes.
Generally, there is a preference for smaller scale, effective direct action and for local work, as opposed to propaganda orientated demonstrations, or for international mass mobilisation. Sometimes these tactics are supported as part of a larger campaign.
Main issues are at the moment genetics, nuclear transports, climate and infrastructure. The asfalt lobby in Holland is very strong and interlinked with politics and bureaucracy, and is thus a symbol for non-democracy and capitalism. This seems to encourage infrastructure to be a main issue. As said, there is no formal process on deciding on tactics and issues.
GroenFront! has its roots in the Dutch anarchist and squatter's movement that is still quite strong. In many towns ecological and social squatter's centers, cafés and infoshops are the communal roots and base for organising and mobilising for actions.
There is a loosely structured support group to help out new groups and activists, to provide information to students, groups of local inhabitants opposing projects, and serve as a contactadress for anonymous groups of activists.
The Infocenter is a place that provides working space, left wing & anarchist literature, a telephone, a fax and internet access. It is located in a self-controlled building 'de Wilde Wereld' (translated as 'the wild world') in the center of Wageningen. Daily, people with an anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, anti-patriachical and anti-racist view are working at the Infocenter.
They analyse various developments in the current society and choose focal points to direct their activities at aiming to attack capitalism, patriachy and racism.
Currently there are 5 groups actively involved within the Infocenter.
About ten people are participating in one or more of the five groups that fully support the political view mentioned above. Sometimes other people are involved with a particular project of one of the groups. They do not necessarily share the same political views as the basic group of people.
We welcome anyone willing to start a political group or willing to participate in an excisting groups.
The five groups:
The Magpie and the Elephant is an autonomous center documenting the struggle and way of life of indigenous peoples. It's founded by radical left people aiming to support and make the struggle of indigenous peoples more visible for interested people. The fight against capitalism is more important than exclusively humanitarian indigenous peoples issues.
Beside updating the archive, writing articles and answering questions, the Magpie and the Elephant is active in networking and organising actions and campaigns. Examples are the past four global days of action against capitalism: june 18, november 30, mayday2k, september 26 and organising a cycle of presentations about West-Papoea last februari.
Refugees Under Roof (VOD) A foundation that supports illegalised refugees. VOD mainly directs it's activities at practical social work and legal support. During the three years of existence many refugees were supported, varying from a single financial gift to helping people returning to the asylumprocedures or looking for an alternative perspective together.
Once in a while VOD organises actions in Wageningen.
Besides social and legal support, the Middle-East Teatent is one of the most successful activities of VOD. Refugees sell tea, coffee and snacks from the Middle-East to provide for their own living and to inform people about political themes. VOD also organises worlddisco's and various cultural events. VOD is the only group within the Infocenter which receives money from the government of Wageningen to pay the costs of the office.
Workplace Left Analysis Biopolitics (LAB) DNA of indigenous peoples, fetusses and oocytes as material for the biotech-industry? Pre-natal and pre-implantation diagnostics: new shapes of eugenics? Public debates to placify people and hail new technologies?
Many things seem to be possible with development in modern biotechnology.
It might be funny that things are possible but who will gain from it? Besides, is all that is possible also desirable?
With this kind of questions in mind, people from NoGen (since 2000 LAB) critically observe developments in biotechnology. By writing articles, organising presentations, publishing the magazine 'BioBrief' and a website (http://huizen.dds.nl/~lablab) we distribute our analyses.
Biotechnology Archive NoGen Eugenics, new reproductiontechnologies, xenotransplantation, cloning, preventive healthcare, the Human Genome Project, population politics, euthanasia, bioethics, regulations and lots and lots more. Over 20.000 newspaper articles, hundreds of books and magazines, video-tapes, music-tapes and e-mails.
NoGen provides scholars, students, pupils, journalists, activists and others with information about the above mentioned subjects among others.
Currently the archive is mainly focussed at the healthcare system and anti-eugenics.
Workgroup Xenotransplantation Issues (WXV) wants to place questionmarks at the developments of the transplantation technology and wants to encourage people to develop a view about it. The Workgroup contributes to the public debate on xenotransplantation started december 1999 with an extensive website (http://www.stelling.nl/xeno), a free brochure and archive material.
The groups gives priority to fighting for womens- and humanrights, over the fight against genetic manipulation. The campaign against xenotransplantation is a considerable success in terms of public attention and appreciation for the information provided (especially for the website).

Global Action Scotland Global Action Scotland (GAS) is a convergence of several Scotland-based groups and organisations involved in campaigning around a variety of issues. The groups are both independent and interdependent, communicating through an email list, meetings, annual three-day workshops; and collective actions/campaigns.
Amongst the independent initiatives involved in GAS are: the Glasgow-based MayDay collective, which is involved in organising MayDay protests and other anti-capitalist campaigns; the Edinburgh-based Autonomous Centre which is involved in a range of issues dealing with the unemployed, prisoners support, and solidarity campaigns; Faslane Peace Camp which has waged a 14 year long struggle against the Trident nuclear submarine base; the Talamh housing collective which is currently engaged in opposing open cast quarrying in Scotland; and various locally-based Scottish Earth First! groups. GAS also has working relations with the (separate) Globalise Resistance network.
GAS has been in existence for a year, although many of the constituent groups have been organising for many years. It was established following last year's May Day in Glasgow, which saw the participation of 2500 people. Activists involved in the May Day protests decided that they required more contact and coordination with other Scottish-based groups and struggles. GAS was established as a Scottish response to the PGA convergence, attempting to coordinate previously separate struggles, provide solidarity and support and share information. Recent examples of collaboration have been effecting the visit to Scotland of PCN activist Naka Mandinga; cooperation for this year's May Day protests in Glasgow; coordinating protests against the Efficient Consumer Response corporate visit to Glasgow; and planning a Scottish presence at S26 in Prague, and the forthcoming Genoa days of action.
This network is at a nascent stage of development, but many activists have articulated the desire to learn more about PGA processes and initiatives and become more involved in the PGA convergence. It is with this desire - for more contact, interaction, and information - that GAS request the participation of a representative at the forthcoming PGA International Conference.
