Report from Peterborough, NH - Sept. 13th rally

On September 13th community organizations from southern New Hampshire held a Community Rally in Peterborough, NH in solidarity with a Worldwide Day of Action Against Corporate Globalization and War. The groups celebrated a recent state-level decision which turned off the tap, at least for now, on USA Spring's plan to withdraw and bottle up to 310,000 gallons daily of groundwater from wells in Nottingham, NH. The decision was discussed within the context of the trade meetings taking place in Cancun, Mexico that are considering rules that would overturn local decisions of this type.

The Peterborough rally featured speakers including Rep. Chuck Weed, NH House of Representatives, Joan Roelofs, author and Professor Emerita of Political Science, Keene State College, Doris “Granny D” Haddock, political activist and John Friede, Executive Director, Worldview, Ltd. The speakers provided an informative analysis of privatization schemes that target water delivery services, higher education and other vital services. The event also featured a march through the streets of downtown Peterborough including citizens ranging in age from 4 to 93. The marchers sang songs and carried signs with messages such as:

Hey WTO: EVERYTHING is Not For Sale

Local Rule Not Corp.Profits

WTO Kills Farmers

Our World is Not For Sale

Dismantle the WTO

NAFTA = 766,000 Lost Jobs, No New NAFTA

Build Fair Trade, Not Free Trade
