While anti-war protests surged this past year, many "global justice" protesters have struggled to regain their balance nearly two years after September 11. So-called "anti-globalization" actions no longer seem to garner the headlines they once did in the days after Seattle, at least in the corporate, American media.
From September 10-15, the WTO will meet in Cancun, Mexico, and the agenda encompasses everything from foreign investment and patent rights to trade barriers. Thousands of protesters will be on hand to greet the delegates. And for the first time in many months, local NYC actions are planned in solidarity with the Cancun protests.
United for Peace and Justice and other groups are holding a parade and fesitval of resistance on Saturday, September 13, at 1:00 pm starting in Union Square. According to UFP & J, "a creative, colorful parade and festival of resistance to war and corporate rule. Using music, art and performance, we will stand in solidarity with popular movements in Mexico."
