Since 3pm today (Thursday 19 September) anti-riot units of the army and, it appears, the police, have unleashed a relentless attack with tear gas and beatings against the campesinos, some 4,500, who are in La Maria (municipality of Peindamo) 30 km from Popayan. The surprise attack against the defenceless agricultural workers was unleashed even though they are not occupying any roads. The campesinos (including women and children) are camping in the fields of surrounding farms, surviving without medicines, only one meal a day, and exposed to the elements, because the army confiscated their plastic sheets, tents and food in order to break them through hunger and the ravages of the climate. The campesino population is only asking the national and regional government to accept a commission of their representatives and allow them to hold a peaceful demonstration in Popayan, where they would deliver their list of petitions and present their thoughts on poverty and state abandonment. They were hoping for negotiations to be established with the government so that they could then return to their allotments.
There is a great deal of fear at the thought of what could happen to the campesinos, even more so when yesterday one of the demonstrators died in this same spot, victim of a heart attack when the army tried to move them away. The campesinos have rejected emphatically the accusations made by the military authorities that this was a demonstration called for by the insurgency. "It is autonomous and peaceful and for that reason we asked for international observers to show that the only things that made us march were poverty and the lack of educational and health services, as well as the lack of financial help to cultivate the land," it was stated in a communique by the Cauca campesinos.
Apart from La Maria where there are 4.500 campesinos, there are another two groups. One is holding out in Pandiuando (El Tambo municipality), where there are around 800 farm labourers exposed to the elements at the road side, surrounded by the army. There is real fear in this place since the paramilitaries announced there could be a massacre at any moment. The other nucleus of demonstrators is in the Sajandi river basin, near to La Fonda (El Patia jurisdiction) where there are some 6,000 campesinos, also surrounded by the army. In this area very many people have fallen ill through drinking contaminated water.

ACCIÓN URGENTE Violencia contra la movilización campesina del Departamento del Cauca
Desde las 3pm de hoy jueves 19 de septiembre/2002, grupos antimotines del Ejército y al parecer también de la Policía, han desatado un repentino ataque con gases lacrimógenos y golpes contra los campesinos y campesinas, unos 4.500, que se encuentran en el sitio La María (jurisdicción del municipio de Piendamó), distante unos 30 kilómetros de Popayán. El sorpresivo ataque contra los indefensos labriegos se ha desatado pese a que estos no ocupan carretera alguna. Los campesinos (mujeres y niños entre ellos), se encuentran ubicados en predios de fincas vecinas, resistiendo sin medicamentos, con una sola comida diaria, y a la intemperie, luego de que el Ejército les decomisara plásticos, carpas y alimentos para rendirlos por hambre y con las inclemencias del clima. El campesinado tan sólo solicita, que el gobierno nacional y regional reciba una comisión suya, y les permita realizar una pacífica manifestación en Popayán, lugar donde entregarían su pliego de peticiones y darían a conocer su crítica situación de pobreza y abandono por parte del Estado, y donde aspiran a conformar una mesa de trabajo con el gobierno, para enseguida regresar a sus parcelas.
Ronda el temor por lo que pueda sucederles, y más, cuando en el día de ayer murió uno de los manifestantes en ese mismo lugar, víctima de un infarto luego de que el Ejército intentara desalojarlos. Los campesinos han sido enfáticos en rechazar las calumnias levantadas por autoridades militares, de que esta pacífica movilización está siendo convocada por la insurgencia.
"Es autónoma y pacífica, y por eso pedimos observadores internacionales, para que comprueben, que los únicos que nos han forzado a protestar son la pobreza y la falta de servicios de educación y salud, así como la falta de préstamos y ayudas para cultivar la tierra", agrega un comunicado de los campesinos caucanos.
Aparte de La María, donde están 4.500 campesinos, otros dos grupos resisten en los sitios Pandiuando (municipio de El Tambo), donde hay cerca de 800 labriegos a la intemperie a un lado de la carretera, rodeados por el Ejército. En este lugar ronda el temor, ante el anuncio de que los paramilitares perpetrarán una masacre en cualquier momento. El otro núcleo de la movilización está ubicado en el crucero del río Sajandí, en cercanías de La Fonda (jurisdicción de El Patía), donde se hallan unos 6.000 campesinos, también rodeados por el Ejército. En este lugar hay un grueso número de intoxicados luego de haber bebido de las aguas del lugar.
