Urgent Action: AUC threaten Coca Cola Union Leader

A folded sheet of paper, sealed with a pin in such a way that the symbol of the "AUTODEFENSAS UNIDAS DE COLOMBIA" (right-wing paramilitaries) was showing, was left on the second floor at No 14-09 42nd Street, Bucaramanga - the offices of the local branch of the Food and Beverages Workers Union SINALTRAINAL, at about 8:00AM on 14th March.

The paper had the following text:

"With the full knowledge of those who live in the city of Bucaramanga, we have noted how the trade union leadership particpates in various activities that are against the economy that generates employment in this region. This is especially so in the case of the Coca Cola union headed by, amongst others, its president EFRAIN GUERERO who in his public interventions makes countinual allusions against the AUC and who participates in the formation of unions attempting to destabilise corporations in Santander department.

Because of the above, and after months of following him, the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia see themselves obliged to place a summonse on the cited individual to abandon the city, or else he will pay with his life for attacking the image of our organisation and the irresponsibility of the language who has used on public occasions, specifically in front of the Coca Cola plant on 22nd January.

The above is very worrying, it demonstrates the danger to the physical well being and life of our comrade EFRAIN GUERRERO. EFRAIN works in the Coca Cola bottling plant and is President of SINALTRAINAL in Bucaramanga. He has been the victim of persecution and threats on several occasions. We demand that the Colombian government and authorities protect the life of our comrade and provide the guarantees he needs to carry out trade union activities.

El día 14 de Marzo de 2003 siendo aproximadamente las 8:00 A.M., en la oficina de SINALTRAINAL Seccional Bucaramanga ubicada en la calle 42 No 14-09 segundo piso fue encontrada una hoja doblada y sellada con un gancho, al ser abierta en el encabezamiento de dicho comunicado aparece un símbolo de las "AUTODEFENSAS UNIDAS DE COLOMBIA" (paramilitares), con el siguiente texto:

"Con pleno conocimiento de quienes conviven en la ciudad de Bucaramanga, hemos observado como la dirigencia sindical viene haciéndose participe de las diferentes actividades que están en contra de la economía que viene generando empleo en esta región, caso especial el sindicato de cocacola en cabeza del presidente EFRAIN GUERERO, entre otros quien públicamente en sus intervenciones hace alusión continua y en contra de las (AUC) a la ves que viene participando en la conformación de sindicatos que atentan con la estabilidad de las empresas santandereanas.

Por lo anterior y producto de largos meses de seguimiento, las Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia se ven en la obligación de emplazar al citado personaje a abandonar la ciudad o de lo contrario responderá con su vida por atentar contra la imagen de nuestra organización y la irresponsabilidad como viene manejando su vocabulario en sitios públicos concretamente frente a las instalaciones de cocacola el pasado 22 de enero.

Lo anterior nos preocupa, ya que demuestra el peligro en que pueda estar la vida y la integridad física de nuestro compañero EFRAIN GUERRERO trabajador de la embotelladora de Coca cola y Presidente de SINALTRAINAL en la ciudad de Bucaramanga, quien en varias ocasiones ha sido víctima de persecución y amenazas, exigimos del Gobierno y las autoridades colombianas proteger la vida de nuestro compañero y brindar las garantías para realizar las actividades sindicales.
