Human Rights Organization's Headquarters in Buenos Aires was Attacked

The headquarters of the Peace and Justice Service (SERPAJ) in the Argentinean capital, Buenos Aires, was robbed and destroyed, on Wednesday.
Besides the material losses-such as the destruction of the office's furniture-the members of SERPAJ, an organization that works for the defense and promotion of human rights, regret the loss of information.
President of SERPAJ in Argentina, is the architect and Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1980, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel.
"This morning, we found out that we had been robbed and our office had been destroyed. They broke doors and windows, robbed our six computers and went through our files. Clearly, they were looking for information, not money," the Argentinean activist told EFE news agency.
"The message was clear and concerning. We denounced the fact to the police and they came over to investigate. They told us that these people used gloves, there were no fingerprints," Perez Esquivel added.
According to SERPAJ authorities six computers, a fax machine, flags, books and material used during the 3rd Peoples Summit-Nov. 1st to 4th in Mar del Plata-were taken from the office.
SERPAJ and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel participated in the activities of the 3rd People's Summit, which took place parallel to the 4th Summit of the Americas, held on November 4th and 5th, in Mar del Plata.
The organization released a communiqué, signed by Pérez Esquivel, saying,"it is interesting that this criminal act took place just few days after the end of the Peoples Summit in Mar del Plata."
SERPAJ is waiting for the results of the investigation. They claim that this incident will complicate their work for the defense and promotion of human rights, but it will not end their struggle.

La sede del Servicio Paz y Justicia (SERPAJ) en Buenos Aires, capital de Argentina fue saqueada y destruida el miércoles.
Además de los daños materiales, como el destrozo de muebles y puertas de la oficina, los integrantes del SERPAJ, que trabaja en defensa de los derechos humanos y la solidaridad entre las personas a nivel internacional, lamentan la pérdida de valiosísima información y material.
El presidente del SERPAJ de Argentina es Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, arquitecto, artista plástico y ganador del Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1980.
El intelectual argentino dijo el miércoles a la agencia de noticias EFE: "Esta mañana nos encontramos con que habían saqueado y destruido todo. Rompieron puertas y ventanas, robaron los seis ordenadores que teníamos y revisaron nuestros archivos, por lo que evidentemente estaban buscando información y no dinero".
"El mensaje fue muy claro y es muy preocupante. Incluso cuando denunciamos el hecho a la policía y vinieron a investigar nos dijeron que esta gente usó guantes, porque no han dejado huellas digitales", agregó Pérez Esquivel.
Las autoridades del SERPAJ denunciaron que les fueron robadas seis computadoras, un equipo de fax, banderas, artículos de librería y material utilizado durante la III Cumbre de los Pueblos, realizada del 1º al 4 de noviembre en la oriental ciudad argentina de Mar del Plata.
El SERPAJ y especialmente Adolfo Pérez Esquivel participaron activamente en las actividades de la III Cumbre de los Pueblos, paralela a la IV Cumbre de las Américas que se realizó el 4 y 5 de noviembre en la misma ciudad.
La organización difundió un comunicado de prensa, firmado por su presidente, en el que señala que "llama mucho la atención que este acto vandálico ocurra apenas unos días después de finalizar la Cumbre de los Pueblos en Mar del Plata".
El comunicado agrega que el SERPAJ espera el esclarecimiento del hecho, "que dificultará mucho el desarrollo de nuestros trabajos de defensa y promoción de los Derechos Humanos, pero no logrará acabar con nuestras luchas".
