Proposal from [www.] escanda [.org] to the dijon meeting

convenors' committe meeting 1-15 july
intro to support group work, 4-6 and 11-13 july

why?

where?

we can get good facilities in pola de lena, 2,5 km away from where escanda is located. we will get a school with space and mattresses for up to 350 people for the skill sharing on communication, and can also use several other buildings and facilities for free. if the convenors want, we can get free access to a quiet place (another smaller school about 6 km away from the other) for the meeting, close enough to pola to interact with the communication meeting, and far enough to have a bit of peace of mind... we can have the intros to support work in pola de lena.

who?

besides the european convenors (whoever they are at the time), we suggest to invite one person from:

current convenors:

indian movements (ex-convenors very involved with pga, represent the largest networks of genuinely grassroots movements of the country, and happen to have issues with the wsf process):

african movement (no african convenors, african conference hasn't happened yet):

money?

the food and accommodation costs are negligible, we in escanda can deal with them, and have excellent chances to get all the visas. the problem, as always, is the tickets. we hope that the canadians sort out their own ticket (and hopefully at least one for one of the southern orgs) and that the maori ticket can be dealt with by people from the pacific pga network. if that works, we'd be talking about 2-4 for latin america, 1-3 for asia (3 if people think that it's a good idea to talk about what to do about wsf with the indian movs.) and 1 from africa - between 4 and 8 tickets altogether (around 5.000-6.000 €). hopefully several groups can put some money for the tickets, especially if they get a visit (which they'd also have to pay) after the g8 mobilisation.

how?

we'd find it lovely if this idea could be presented in dijon on saturday and discussed on sunday, so that if people have questions they can get back to us (+34 651 922 443, apologies 4 not being there, busy time now!!). if the dijon meeting likes the idea, we would then present it to the convenors asking for feedback. If they like it, we'd put out a call to the complete network with 2 purposes: encouraging all collectives that want to be part of the global dimension of pga to participate in the intros, and asking everyone to try to contribute to the travel costs of southern convenors. if people think that this meeting / intros are a good idea, hopefully the networks are strong enough to be able to get together decentralised funding for it. we can ask convenors if they'd like to come to the anti-g8 protests and visit some of the groups that pay their travel costs in june, in case people want to do local activities with the convenors they (co-)invite. of course, we'd love all people who are / have been involved in support work to be involved in designing and doing the intros.

Easter and summer meetings on communication

Easter meeting

Organised by EYFA ( www.eyfa.org) and escanda (www.escanda.org), together with people from the Green Pepper Magazine (

A fundamental, but often overlooked, part of our actions and organising relies on good communications. This can mean our interpersonal relationships, the way we run meetings and make decisions, how we interact with our local communities, how we network, how we talk about our struggles, how we represent ourselves, and are represented in the media, and how we share and distribute information. Taking 'communicating' as a broad theme for this meeting we hope to engage in lively discussion, share lots of skills and strengthen networks across Europe.

We're going to program some specific workshops - we're thinking about meeting skills, interview techniques, building better distribution networks for alternative media, indymedia and internet skills - but we're keen to include much more! So suggest workshops you'd like to see, or can help put on, people we should invite and skills you'd like to learn/share.

There is some money for a limited amount of funding to offer people as travel reimbursements. We are really looking for people who will play an active and participatory role in the meeting. We are hoping for a diverse and stimulating mix of participants that will create an atmosphere of mutual learning and creativity.

We expect this meeting to help prepare a super exciting funky grrreat summer meeting (which will have a different name, we're still looking for something irresistible, if you have ideas please let us know)

Summer meeting

People active in indymedia networks and other media collectives have said they'd like to create a space for skill-sharing and collective creation in the first two weeks of July. We really love that idea, and would like to arrange a good and reliable infrastructure (working spaces, sleeping and cooking facilities, internet access, chill-out venues and events, etc) for at least 350 people to come in the summer to work together in projects related to communication, share skills and have fun! (350 is the amount of mattresses, but if there's loads of interest, we could produce a crafty camping plot.)

We envision this as a fluid do-it-yourself style of event, where people with communication needs and people with experience in this area can converge, be creative, and help to cover everyone else's needs. We expect to have by then a large infrastructure in place to fulfil different objectives:

  1. working on projects and/or organising trainings on, for example, wireless internet, free software, video edition, local (pirate) tv, internet radio, paper publications, distribution, etc.
  2. having discussions on political issues related to communication (there's plenty of those)
  3. working together with people from Southern movements and media collectives which we hope will be there to participate in the summer meetings/seminars (on the war(s), gender and Palestine/Israel) [if you're intrigued by the summer meetings/seminars, go www.escanda.org then to english and to activities]. We expect a few of them to come earlier to enhance their communication tools and practices.
  4. If there's lots of people enthusiastic about all this, we would like to also invite a network of organisations of women living under muslim laws to have their own meeting (also in separate facilities, there's loads of freely available space around pola) also during these dates, with interactions with the convenors, with the supporters, and with everyone else. For this we'd probably have to find separate funding possibilities though. Any ideas?

If anyone likes to get involved in the planning of these things, give us a shout at escanda-info(AT)gmx.net
