Invitation to the Biozone
A SEED's organic neighbourhood for the G8 protestsAs you may know, at the end of May / beginning of June this year, the G8 is meeting in Evian, France (close to Lake Geneva). There are various protests being planned against this, and A SEED Europe is taking part. We are joining the Intergalactic Village, organised by the 'G8 Illegal' network. This consists of a varied group of people: anarchists, greens, students, people from different social centres and networks, Attac, and even a few revolutionary communists. The viewpoints of this village are: a total rejection of the G8, self organisation and no hierarchy, respect for the environment, no sexism, racism, homophobia, anti-semitism, etc and for the rest, political openness for groups to participate actively (see: http://g8illegal.lautre.net/ for more info).
It will take place from the 28th May until the 3rd June, close to Evian. The village will be split up into at least six neighbourhoods or 'barrios' and A SEED is organising the Biozone - a space focused on issues of biotechnology and organic food production. Organic food in the Biozone will be provided by the Dutch food collective, Rampenplan. We will also have a bar, and organise a programme of workshops and videos.
We're sending you this invitation because we are looking for groups to come to the G8 and to join our project and programme. It would be great if somebody from your network could come and give a workshop or show a video, or coordinate some other activity which involves food issues. We are not focusing on any one particular food issue - almost anything would be welcome, e.g. biotechnology companies; the WTO; lobby groups; direct action against test fields; greenwashing; supermarkets; farming methods; local food chains; organic methods; permaculture; food aid; CAP; patenting.....
We also hope you can help with mobilising for the G8 and the Biozone in your country and invite environmental and food minded activists to join the Biozone and the actions.
Our aim is to raise the profile of food issues amongst the people who come to the protests. Many people who are concerned about the G8 and globalisation aren't necessarily concerned about how food is produced and consumed. We want to make the connections which show that food is a social issue as well as an environmental issue and that the problems surrounding it go right to the heart of concerns about economic globalisation. The Biozone will also be a useful place for networking for grassroots activists working on food issues around Europe.
