Ejercito Dignidad Nacional (EDN)

Members of a recently-formed armed group that call themselves the Ejercito Dignidad Nacional (EDN), or National Dignity Army in English, raise their outdated weapons after training in the highlands near the Chapare coca-growing region in central Bolivia, January 18, 2003. Quechua Indians from this region announced on January 21, 2003, the creation of the EDN as a response to what they call the growing military and police repression against Indians fighting for their rights in different parts of the country. Currently thousands of poor farmers in the Chapare are blocking a key national highway to stop the forced eradication of their coca plantations, in a ten-day conflict that has left at least six dead and more than 50 injured.
