PLEASE SEND LETTERS OF PROTEST AGAINST THE ACTION OF THE GOVERNMENT AND IN 
SUPPORT OF THE STRUGGLE OF THE ECUADOREAN PEOPLE (WITH A COPY TO THIS 
ADRESS). ECUADOR LIVES IN A CIVILIAN DICTATURSHIP-THE NOBOA GOVERNMENT 
DECLARES A STATE OF EMERGENCY, AND THE LIVES AND SAFETY OF THE LEADERS AND  
THE THOUSANDS OF PEASANTS WHO ARE OCCUPYING THE HIGHWAYS OF THE COUNTRY ARE 
AT RISK. SO ARE THOSE WHO REMAIN AT THE SALESIANA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY.

Que interés tiene el gobierno de Noboa al provocar una conflictividad 
 >social con estas acciones dictatoriales?. ¿Al no querer dialogar y 
 >desconocer a sus legítimos representantes de las organizaciones indígenas 
y >campesinas?.

What interests does the Noboa government have in provoking a social conflict 
with these dictatorial actions? Why is he refusing to dialogue and recognise 
the legimate represantives of the indigenous and peasant 
organisations?Currently in Ecuador, enormous economic interests are at stake 
through lucrative contracts: there is  a surcharge of 600 million dollars 
for  petrol contracted for the construction of a pipeline; there is  the 
rescue operation for the banks, carried out by  issuing bonds and the use of 
1,100 million dollars of monetary reserves in order to once again rescue 
banks which are on the verge of bankcruptcy, the privatisation of Social 
Security, which signifies 600 million dollars annually. (not sure of

Why is the government acting in style of Fujimori? It is bringing chaos to 
the country , ignoring congress, taking on absolute powers. If this is it’s 
role, it is possibel it is  counting on the support of the government of the 
United States, we should recall that Plan Colombia comes into full force in 
March. (not sure of translation)

Sure enough, after a little while, they started to forcefully  evict the 
more than 10 000 peasants, amongst them men, women and children and those 
ready to hold their ground in the Salesiana University in Quito (not sure of 
translation). Meanwhile, the peasant leaders, aware of the eviction order, 
proceeded to declare a hunger strike to the end, as a way of peacefully 
applying pressure on the government for a national dialogue.

Organsiation of American States, the United Nations, the UN Commission on 
Human Rights, the Red Cross, to democratic governments, and social 
organisations, unions, and peasant organisations of the entire world to send 
letters condemning the dictatorial behaviour (unsure of translation) of the 
Noboa  government and to demand that he  opens dialogue, as a way of 
resolving the conflicts, and to express active solidarity in favour of and 
in support of the demands of the people of Ecuador.
