(eng) Hi there! As you probably know, the next summit of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) will take place in October-November in Quito, Ecuador. The Ecuatorian peasant movement CONFEUNASSC is organising a large mobilisation against it called the Ring of Diversity. Below you will find a report of the Caravans of Diversity that they are organising in rural areas around the country to raise awareness and mobilise against the summit. CONFEUNASSC is doing this organisational effort with their own, very scarce resources, but this situation is not sustainable for them. The caravans are planned to continue but some resources are needed for that and also for the actions during the summit itself. With no money, it will be difficult to give Bush and the rest of the gang the sort of grassroots response that they deserve. So please talk with your collective about the possibility of donating some cash for this. If you are in Europe, it would be brilliant if you could talk about this before the European PGA conference in Leiden, and even better if you could take the money there (or pass it on to other groups that might be coming) so that we can send it on one transfer and minimise the bank fees. **************** THE CARAVANS, MORE THAN JUST WORDS The men and women of the land, organised in CONFEUNASCC-CNC, have initiated the Caravans of Diversity against the FTAA. The first one took place on the 20th of July in the Southern provinces (Azuay, Loja, El Oro). It took place in seven working cabildos (spaces for community decision-making) and more than 200 compañer@s took part. It went through the rural municipalities which are distant from the capitals. Despite the economic difficulties, we counted with the enthusiasm and support from the population. Community leaders participated as facilitators in the caravan, as well as compañer@s (economists, lawyers, popular theatre makers, photographers, video teams, etc). Both objectives of the caravan were fulfilled: getting across a message about the FTAA problem, its impacts on food sovereignity, in the culture, and the sovereignity of the peoples, as well as serving as a space to call for the days of struggle against the FTAA. A resut of this first caravan was the articulation of a proposal to mobilise during the days of action 15000 peasants and to participate in a Southern caravan to Quito, with the aim of participating in the Ring of Diversity (the siege of the ministerial summit). A local team of information multiplicators was created, which is now training others and spreading the call through assemblies to other communards. There have been events called by the multiplicators where more than 400 peasants have participated and informed themselves about the FTAA. According to our initial objective, the caravans of diversity are enabling us to consolidate a proposal for permanent social discussion and mobilisation. It is through the regional caravans that we have been working on proposals against FTAA. It is perhaps the first time that the mobilisations are being called for from the communities, and when other forms of integration are being discussed. The itinerary has enabled us to reach out to hundreds of compañer@s, mainly from the rural sector, from which 60% are women (whose participation in centralised workshops, talks and forums is minimal). In order to make sure that the information that reaches the communities is understandable and efficiently dispersed, we have been working on a methodology based on the peasant reality. Our caravans are born from the experience of work on health issues by our organisation, and are permanently enriched by the re-creation of the experience. The resources of popular education (action, reflection, action) such as theatre, social drama, juggling, music and discussions, are elements that enable us to advance in the mobilisation. We believe that the caravans are a means to deepen the peasant proposal on the construction of alternatives and resistance based on solidarity, equity, reciprocity, interculturality and peasant-identity. The process of the caravans enables us to construct alternatives to the social, political and economic problems of the rural population. The communities speak about strengthening the peasant social security, defending our food sovereignity, work on the proposal of a native seedbank, looking after our food culture and our genetic diversity, struggling for the access to land, defending our environment, biodiversity and water. The caravans want to go beyond the peasant leadership, they want to reach out to the grassroots, the communities, they try to get the popular leaders to take a bottom-up approach when working on community proposals, they want to revive the human elements that are being lost due to globalisation. The mobilisation in October will reflect the unity in diversity, will gather the voices of thousands of indios, peasants and popular sectors who are excluded by the current political and economic model. It is because of this that during the caravan, the peasants will be the ones interviewed by alternative radios, where they will talk about the concrete problems of communities, such as the effects of the introduction of canned and transgenic products that threaten the peasant lifestyle. The Southern provinces are affected by a growing migration to other countries, the abandonment of villages and houses is more evident now than 10 years ago, due to the implementation of the neoliberal capitalist system. The caravans are an invitation, a call not to be quiet, to talk and shout and propose, they are a concrete invitation to mobilise, a call for global action and solidarity, a call to globalise hope. At the beginning of September we will begin the journey of the caravans to the Northern mountains and the coast, we hope to count on the generous solidarity and support of friends and communities across the world. El movimiento campesino CONFEUNASSC esta organizando una gran movilizacion en su contra llamada el Anillo de la Diversidad. En este mensaje encontrareis un informe de las Caravanas de la Diversidad que estan organizando en zonas rurales de todo el pais para crear conciencia y movilizar contra la cumbre. CONFEUNASSC esta realizando este esfuerzo organizativo con sus propios y muy escasos recursos, pero esta situacion no es sostenible para ell@s. Hay planes para continuar las caravanas pero hacen falta recursos, tanto para las caravanas como para las acciones durante la cumbre. Sin plata, sera dificil darle a Bush y sus secuaces el tipo de respuesta de base que se merecen. Asi que por favor, discute en tu colectivo la polibilidad de donar algo de plata. Si estas en europa, seria fantastico si pudierais hablar de esto antes de la conferencia europea de la AGP en Leiden, y mejor aun si pudierais llevar la plata alli (o darsela a otros grupos que vayan a ir) para poder enviarla en una sola transferencia y reducir al minimo la plata que se quedan los bancos. ********************************************************************* LAS CARAVANAS, MÁS QUE UNA MINGA DE PALABRAS Los hombres y mujeres del campo organizados en la Confederación Nacional del Seguro Campesino “CONFEUNASSC-CNC”, iniciamos las caravanas de la diversidad en contra del ALCA; El 20 de julio arranco la primera caravana en las provincias del Sur del país, (Azuay, Loja, El Oro). La primera caravana desarrolló siete cabildos de trabajo (espacios de decisión comunitaria), en las que participaron más de 200 compañer@s. La caravana recorrió 7 cantones de los poblados rurales lejanos a las capitales de provincia. Pese a las dificultades de carácter económico, se contó con el entusiasmo y apoyo de la población, en la caravana participaron como facilitadores lideres y ligerezas así como compañer@s (economistas, abogados, teatreros populares, fotógrafos, camarógrafos, etc), el objetivo de llegar con un mensaje sobre la problemática del ALCA, los impactos en la soberanía alimentaría, en la cultura y en la soberanía de los pueblos, así como ser un espacio de convocatoria a las jornadas de lucha contra el ALCA se cumplieron. Fruto de esta primera jornada de la caravana se logro articular una propuesta inicial de movilizar durante los días de acción a 15 mil campesin@s y acompañar a la caravana del Sur en la marcha hacia Quito, con el fin de participar en el anillo de la diversidad (cerco a la cumbre ministerial). Se conformo un equipo local de multiplicadores de la información, de la resistencia y que hoy se encuentran capacitando y convocando por medio de asambleas a los demás comuneros. Ha habido eventos convocados por los multiplicadores en las que han estado presentes mas de 400 campesinos, informándose sobre el ALCA. Como fue el objetivo inicial, las caravanas de la diversidad, nos están permitiendo consolidar una propuesta de discusión y movilización social permanente. Es a través de las caravanas regionales que se viene trabajando las propuestas en contra del ALCA. Hoy, quizá es la primera vez que se convoca a la movilización desde las comunidades, y se discute sobre otras formas de integración. El recorrido nos ha permitido llegar a cientos de compañer@s principalmente del sector rural, de los cuales un 60% son compañeras mujeres ( Población que en talleres, charlas, foros centralizados se llega en porcentajes mínimos). Para que la información que llega a las comunidades sea comprensible y tenga un efecto multiplicador se ha trabajado metodologicamente en base a la realidad campesina. Nuestras caravanas nacen de la experiencia de trabajo realizado en el tema de salud al interior de nuestra organización y hoy se enriquecen permanentemente en la recreación de la experiencia. Los recursos de educación popular (acción, reflexión, acción), como el teatro, el socio drama, los malabares, la música y la charla; son elementos que nos permiten articular la movilización. Creemos que las caravanas son un medio de profundización de la propuesta campesina sobre la construcción de alternativas y de resistencia en base a la solidaridad, equidad, reciprocidad, interculturalidad e identidad campesina. El proceso caravanas nos permite construir alternativas a la problemática social, política, económica de la población rural, entonces las comunidades hablan de fortalecer su seguro social campesino, defender nuestra soberanía alimentaria, trabajar la propuesta de un banco de semillas nativas, que nos permita cuidar nuestra cultura alimentaria, cuidar de nuestro patrimonio genético, luchar por el acceso a la tierra, defender el medioambiente, la biodiversidad y el agua. Las caravanas, pretender ir más allá de la dirigencia campesina, intentan llegar a la base, a la comunidad, intentar que los técnicos populares y los dirigentes trabajen la propuesta desde abajo, intentan ese acercamiento humano que en estos tiempos de globalización se están perdiendo. La movilización de octubre va a reflejar la unidad en la diversidad, va a juntar las voces de los miles de indios, campesinos y sectores populares excluidos del modelo económico y político actual. Es por eso que durante la caravana, los mismos campesinos son aquellos que dan entrevistas para las radios alternativas, en las que plantean los problemas concretos de las comunidades, como los efectos de la apertura mercantilista de productos enlatados, transgénicos que amenazan a la forma de vida campesina. Las provincias del Sur, son afectadas por la creciente migración hacia el extranjero, la desolación de pueblos y caseríos es mas evidente hoy que hace 10 años, fruto de la implementación del modelo neoliberal capitalista. Las caravanas son una invitación, una convocatoria a no quedarse tranquilo, a hablar, a gritar, a proponer , son una invitación concreta a movilizarse, es un llamado a la acción y solidaridad global, es un llamado a globalizar la esperanza. A inicios de Septiembre iniciaremos las caravanas de la sierra norte y la costa, esperamos contar con el esfuerzo generoso y solidario de los pueblos hermanos.
