Protesting farmers' rally thwarted by police
MUMBAI: Over 51,000 farmers on Monday courted arrest after they were denied permission to move towards the city port to stage a symbolic protest against import of foodgrains and the World Trade Organisatin (WTO).
Farmers, in response to a call given by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Chaudhary Mahendra Singh Tikait, had gathered at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai in large numbers from across the country to lodge their protest against liberalisation and globalsiation.
Earlier, police used water cannons and resorted to mild lathi charge at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai to prevent the farmers from moving towards the port.
Tikait urged police to allow the farmers to march towards the port and assured that the agitation will be non-violent. Police, however, refused the permission and used water cannons to disperse the farmers who were trying to move towards the port. The farmers then courted arrest.
All of them were released immediately, the Deputy Commossioner of Police Ashok Kamte, told PTI.
The leaders who courted arrest include Tikait, Karnataka Rajya Rayat Sangh president Prof Nanjundaswamy, Shetkari Sanghatan president Vijay Jawandia, BKU'S Delhi unit president Yudhveer Singh, Punjab unit chief Ajmer Singh Lakhowal and its national coordinator Rohtas Rathee.

51.000 Massenverhaftung in Indien bei Proteste gegen WTO
In Indien haben sich mehrere BäuerInnenbewegungen zusammengeschlossen und eine lange Karawane durch Indien durchgeführt um gegen die Konsequenzen der WTO Politik und die Handelsliberalisierung zu protestieren. Am Ende war eine friedliche Massenbesetzung eines Hafens bei Mumbai vorgesehen bei dem importierte Agrarprodukte verbrannt werden sollten.
So weit kam es nicht, da die Polizei im Weg war, die die BäuerInnen mit Wasserwerfern zurückgedrängt hat. Was interessant ist , ist das Verhalten der InderInnen bezüglich der Staatsrepression: Wird eine/r verhaftet, soll der Staat auch die Konsequenz spüren und alle lassen sich dann verhaften. Stellt euch mal eine Massenverhaftung von 51.000 Leute vor. Alle wurden freigelassen.
Bei NAPM (ein Bündnis von über 150 Basisorganisationen) wird zur Zeit drüber diskutiert im November (anlässlich der WTO Tagung in der Wüste Quatars ?) eine sehr breite Mobilisierung in ganz Indien zu machen bei der Menschen im ganzen Land unbegrenzt lange Aktionen durchführen (Besetzungen, Blockaden etc). Mal gucken was die Ergebnisse ihrer Diskussionen werden.
