En. summaries of the Thessaloniki 2003 events will be posted here over the next few days. Only the news items per se, from the Athens Indy newswire, will be posted — for there are also a great many other articles and reports in the newswire already, as well as many photographs that can be seen. Apologies for any news items overlooked — it is not at all intentional and is to be very regretted. - sc

Summary: No border action to support the roma refugees at the greek macedonian border.
Article: At the greek-macedonian border near Bitola there are 700 roma refugees camping in order to make public the pressure to get into Greece. Originally escaped from Kosovo during the war of 1999 to Macedonia, they are allowed to stay in different camps and private houses. Since March, now they are pushed away by the Macedonian state according to EU — refugee, so called humanitarian — politic. Their situation at the border is obviously incredible, 1 liter of drinkingwater, 1 piece of bread a day, without medical aid, destroyed toilets, without shelter in the burning sun and always controlled and faced by the police.

We want to make a no-border action at this borderpoint to make the effects of EU-politics visible. The roma refugees want to be supported by the protestors against the EU-summit. They need direct help and also they need more public attention.

Summary: About 6,000 people, with the anti-authoritarian bloc, protested today in the Thessaloniki neighborhoods
The article describes the march as being peaceful and without property destruction or confrontations with the police — despite the police being in 'every back-street'. It continues to say that a number of surveillance cameras were destroyed, and many slogans were shouted with great pulsebeat. The article finishes by telling anyone who is not yet arrived to not delay as everything would indicate that Saturday will be a day of tough struggle.

Summary: [?N]More than 10.000 people participated today (19/6)in the demonstration against Fortress Europe in Thessaloniki, organized by leftist antiracist groups and antiglobal coalitions.
[EN]?oday was the first day of demos in Thessaloniki, against the Eu-Summit, and it was "dedicated" to immigrants. In the afternoon, two demonstrations took place in the city, one in 6.00 p.m. by anarchists/antiauthoritarians and one in 7.00 p.m. organized by leftist antiracist organizations and antiglobal coalitions (Greek Social Forum, Genova 2001 Initiative, Struggle Initative Thessaloniki 2003 and Thessaloniki Resistance 2003).

The latter started at about 7.30 p.m. from Camara (in Egnatia Avenue), with great paricipation (about 10.000 people). Lead by the block of the "antiracist initiative of Thessaloniki", the demo marched with ethusiasm through Egnatia Avenue but also other, smaller, streets of the city, and finally ended at about 9.30 p.m. at the White Tower.

One of the "highlights" of the demo was the small, but passionate presence of immigrants from Africa. In the front blocks some 30-40 people, some of them children, demontrated inside a barbwire "box", in which the slogan "No to Fortress Europe" was imprinted.
