Spacestation Media Lab

Aims and Objectives

• To make available an open access production space for Melbourne-based independent media-makers and others to work on media projects at low or no cost, with the necessary facilities, including hardware, software, internet access and resources like printing, photocopying and stationery.
• To promote a space through which community and independent media projects in Melbourne can network, by having offices housed in Spacestation or through virtual networks like an online projects database, email lists and other interactive media.
• To create an environment where skill-sharing can take place between people and communities involved in media-making in Melbourne-practically through workshops, one-on-one teaching and a database of specialised skills and labour exchange, and politically through the exploration of a collective Do It Yourself culture where everyone can make media.
• To encourage the cross-pollination of arts and politics, with the goal to develop creative forms of activism and political forms of arts practice in whatever spheres we find ourselves working with.
• To facilitate an ongoing dialogue about media, politics and art in Melbourne through seminars, film screenings, conferences, workshops and other events.
• To act as a node in a global network of media laboratories, committed to undertaking exchanges of information, bodies and tactics with other organisations with similar aims.
• To make Spacestation Media Lab self-sustaining and economically viable while preserving integrity and independence from corporate or government institutions.
