The Bündnis gegen Rechts Leipzig (Leipzig Anti-Right Wing Alliance, now alliance against reality ) was founded as an alliance between single members of antifascist groups, parties, and associations in 1996. What triggered it of was the tremendous increase in right wing attacks in the town of Wurzen (cf. also booklet on Wurzen), as well as the establishment of powerful structures of Nazi associations - especially independent groups called Kameradschaften - in the town near Leipzig. It was assumed that in order to fight the right wing hegemony in and around Wurzen the classical autonomous antifascist policy has to be overcome. Therefore the BgR was to be an alliance comprising organisations from different political spectra and with different political approaches. On November 16th 1996 the BgR mobilised more than 6,000 antifascists to participate in a nation-wide protest rally in Wurzen. Our activities in Wurzen, though, were not restricted to the demonstration, but continue until today.

Over the years the scope of our subject area extended largely, e.g. the mobilisation against the marches of the NPD (German National-Democratic Party) on May Day 1997 and 1998, the nation-wide antifascist demonstration in the town of Saalfeld on March 14th 1998, a campaign against social work with Nazis in Grünau, Leipzig, the Verstärkerkongress (Congress on Nazi Dominance and Cultural Hegemony) in October 1999, or the nationwide demonstration "Save the Resistance - gegen Überwachungsgesellschaft und Sicherheitswahn" (against a supervising society and security-mania) on October 14th 2000 in Leipzig - to mention only a few.

Today the BgR is no longer characterised by being an alliance, but an autonomous (independent of any organisation/party, beyond parliamentary politics, and revolutionary) antifascist group with the intention to work continuously on various practical and substantial subject matters and to participate in nation-wide mobilisations and discourse without neglecting our own neighbourhood.
