7 bleiben im U-Haft bis Prozessbeginn in Thessaloniki

Legal update von heute, den 25.6.2003 aus Thessaloniki
7 Personen bleiben im Knast
Der Haftrichter entschied heute, dass 7 Personen, die im Zusammenhang mit den
Protesten gegen den EU-Gipfel in Thessaloniki festgenommem worden sind,
ersteinmal im Knast bleiben. Sie werden jezz die U-Haft antreten.
Bis zu 18 Monaten oder laenger kann es dauern, bis der Prozess beginnt. Im
unguenstigsten Fall werden sie auch mindestens bis dahin im Knast verweilen
muessen.

Die AnwaeltInnen werden fruehestens in einem Monat einen Antrag auf
Haftverschonung stellen. Ob dies erfolgreich sein wird, ist jedoch voellig unklar.

Unter den 7 Gefangenen befinden sich
3 Griechen, 2 aus Athen und einer aus Kosani
2 Spanier, einer aus Madrid und einer aus Burgos
1 Brite und
1 Syrer
gegen alle diese Personen liegen angeblich schwere Anklagen vor, wie etwa der
Besitz und /oder Einsatz von Explosivstoffen, wie Mollis zum Beispiel Anstiftung
und/oder Teilnahme an einer Revolte, Widerstand gegen Staatsgewalt, schwerer
Landfriedensbruch usw.

Korrektur von gestern:
Wir hatten gestern ebenfalls in einem update geschrieben, dass eine Person, ein
Spanier aus Burgos zum "Leader of the International Black Bloc" aufgebaut werden
soll. Es handelt sich dabei nicht um diesen Spanier, sondern um den anderen
Spanier aus Madrid. Sorry, dass und dieser Fehler passiert ist.

alle anderen sind bisher oder werden im Laufe der naechsten Stunden freigelassen.

Gegen zwei Personen, einer aus Italien und einer aus Frankreich laeuft gerade
ein Schnellprozess. Ihre Freilassung wird aber auf jeden Fall erwartet, davon
ist auszugehen, so die AnwaeltInnen.

Den gesamten Morgen ueber hatten bis zu 60 UnterstuetzerInnen vor dem Gericht
gewartet und zwei Transparente in englischer und spanischer Sprache als Zeichen
der Solidaritaet gegenueber dem Gerichtsgebauede aufgehangen.
Nach dem BEKANNTWERDEN der Entscheidung des Gerichts war und ist die Stimmung
dementsprechend betruebt.

Ein US-Amerikaner, der gestern freigelassen worden ist, ist eien Stunde spaeter
wieder verhaftet worden, nachdem er seinen Pass von den Bullen abholen wollte.Er
soll jezz gegen seinen Willen in die USA abgeschoben werden. Er sitzt also zur
Zeit in Abschiebehaft.

UPDATE OF SITUATION OF SOME THESSALONIKI PRISIONERS

Prisoners charged with silly illusions - Expertise in international terrorism!
We have just been informed that the comrade (F), is suffering tortures, having
health problems and propensity to anaemia. And now he is portrayed in the media
as a "basque libertarian, sought internationally..."(!!!), expert in
"international terrorism" (!!)...and presenting him as little less than, as a
species of "subcomandante"(!!)
The media campaign, according to Greek comrades, compares to nothing. But they
suspect that the message that they want to transmit is that of control of "the
dangerous and autochthonous elements " and that all events of this weekend are
due to foreign elements... And also, deviate public attention from of the use of
gases that are prohibited by Greek laws, gases used in Vietnam by the USA (Cn, Cs).
The comrades with whom we are in contact are still suffering symptoms like
discomfort in lungs and eyes.
Twenty-eight persons have their hearing today. The comrade (F) is has it
tomorrow, and it seems that want they want to charge him with possession of
weapons (!!), so as to hold him for 18 months in preventive prison.
The charges on this companion are very serious, it seems they want to put as
"scapegoat" and he could be condemned to up to 15 years of prison (!!!!). THE
SITUATION IS VERY SERIOUS
Another companion that is in a very delicate situation is the comrade from
Syria, who, as we informed before, will be condemned to the death penalty if he
is extradited to his country of origin.
They all have suffered tortures, and continue to suffer tortures at this moment.
The comrade (C.) has had his arms completely bruised and he has lost part of his
hair, because they pulled it out of his head as torture.
We expect to offer a bank account in support for the comrades shortly.

Genf G8: Mindestens 5 Medienschaffende durch Polizei verletzt!

Nebst dem englischen Fotografen Guy Smallman, der am Nachmittag des 1.6.03 von
einer "Schockgranate" schwer verletzt wurde (siehe
 http://www.ssi-media.com/pigbrother/Report2003Part2.htm#8 ), wurden am 1. und
3.6. weitere 3 internationale Medienschaffende sowie 1 Reporter von Radio Suisse
Romande von der Polizei grösstenteils gezielt verletzt - in der Mehrzahl mit
noch nicht absehbaren Folgeschäden.

Mehrere klar gekennzeichnete unabhängige Medienschaffende entgingen zudem am
Abend des 1.6. nur knapp einem weiteren gezielten "Schockgranaten"-Angriff.

Am Abend des 1.6.03 stürmte die berüchtigte "Eingreiftruppe" der Genfer Polizei
(siehe die Affaire Cornavin

höchstwahrscheinlich verstätkt durch KollegInnen der Zürcher Kapo, gegen 21 Uhr
das Independent Media Center (IMC) im Kulturzentrum Usine. Dabei kam es - wenn
auch in geringerem Masse - zu den schon aus Genua bekannten blutigen Szenen.
Andere Pressevertreter wurden dabei nicht zugelassen, und auch das Legal Team
erhielt erst nach knapp 2 Stunden Zutritt, damit sich die BeamtInnen ungestört
austoben konnten.

Wohl kaum ganz zufällig waren 2 der 3 bisher bekannten Verletzten bei dieser
Polizeiaktion unabhängige Medienschaffende:

>> Der italienische Journalist Pulica C. erhielt einen Schlag über den Kopf, die
Wunde musste darauf im Spital genäht werden.

>> Die kanadische Journalistin Jacqueline Soohen bekam einen Zahn ausgeschlagen.

>> Ein Mitarbeiter des Kulturzentrums, der vermitteln wollte, erhielt ebenfalls
einen Schlag auf den Kopf, seine Wunde musste mit 6 Stichen genäht werden.

--> Knüppelschläge auf den Kopf sind laut Polizeireglement klar verboten, da sie
leicht zu Spätschäden führen können inkl. Todesfolge (vgl. u.a. den Fall von Max
in Richard Dindos Film "Dani, Michi, Renato und Max"), erst recht bei den in der
welschen Schweiz neu eingeführten "Totschlägern" (Stahl-Teleskopstöcke). In der
Polizeischule lernen BeamtInnen deshalb (zumindest offiziell) den sog. "Double
Spin" auf die Oberschenkel. Solche Schläge sind derart schmerzhaft, dass ein
Angreifer augenblicklich "neutralisiert" wird, bieten jedoch Gewähr, dass keine
Folgeschäden entstehen. Speziell die Genfer "Eingreiftruppe" ist jedoch dafür
bekannt, mit Vorliebe aus nichtigem Grund (sprich rein zum "Spass") Wehrlosen
auf den Schädel zu knüppeln (und sie anschliessend womöglich noch die Treppe
runterzustossen, siehe die Affaire Cornavin

hatte ein Beamter am 1. Mai 3001 illegalerweise eine solche Stahlrute dabei und
schlug damit mindestens einer Person von hinten auf den Kopf (siehe

sofortige Entlassung sämtlicher BeamtInnen, die sich (nicht nur in Genf)
illegalen Schlägen auf Köpfe schuldig gemacht haben!!!

Offenbar hatte die Genfer Polizei mit "Tränengas" oder sonst einer
korrodierenden Flüssigkeit gekleckert und damit eine ansehnliche Lache auf der
Strasse produziert.

Als die Polizei eine Frau mit dem Fahrrad zum Anhalten zwingt, rutscht sie in
dieser Lache aus und stürzt. Sogleich eilen weitere Beamte herbei, die Gestürzte
muss die kontaminierten Kleidungsstücke wechseln und in Mitleidenschft gezogene
Hautpartien sofort abwaschen ( Bilder siehe u.a.

Weniger Glück als die Fotografin nebenstehenden Bilder hat der brasilianische
Journalist Wolgrand R.

Als er genau den gleichen Vorfall mit seiner Videokamera festhält, wird er von
der Polizei bemerkt - und prompt zur Seite genommen und einer
"Personenkontrolle" unterzogen (siehe oben Bild 3).

Zusätzlich wird ihm ihm sein Band aus der Kamera heraus beschlagnahmt.

Er werde es "später wiederbekommen", versichern die Beamten ihm treuherzig -
dass Bänder und Filme, welche Polizeiübergriffe festhalten, mit unschöner
Regelmässigkeit vorher "irrtümlich" belichtet oder gelöscht werden, ist leider
eine unter JournalistInnen nur allzu bekannte Tatsache, ebenso, dass für
derartige Beschlagnahmungen von Pressematerial nur in den seltensten Fällen eine
Rechtsgrundlage existiert (was die Polizei jedoch kaum je hindert).

Doch damit nicht genug: Während der "Personenkontrolle" und anschliessender
"präventiver Sicherstellung" wird der Journalist von der Polizei übermässig
brutal behandelt, gegen eine Wand gedrückt, zu Fall gebracht und verprügelt,
wobei ihm eine ca. 3 cm grosse blutende Kopfwunde zugefügt wird (siehe oben Bild
3).

Zur Zeit ist nicht bekannt, ob der brasilianische Journalist sein Videoband
zurückerhalten hat und ob er allenfalls rechtliche Mittel ergreift.

>>> Genf 1.6.03: Nur durch Zufall keine weiteren durch "Schockgranaten"
verwundete JournalistInnen

In der Nacht des 1.6. "säubert" eine gemischte Gruppe von PolizeibeamtInnen
verschiedene Kreuzungen von vorwiegend unbeteiligten Schaulustigen. Mit dabei
eine Kolonne deutscher Polizeibeamter mit Wasserwerfer und Mannschaftswagen.
Voraus gehen jeweils schweizer BeamtInnen in Vollmontur und machen grosszügig
Gebrauch von "Schockgranaten". Werden zunächst jeweils 2 "Schockgranaten" pro
Kreuzung den Schaulustigen vor die Füsse gerollt, sind es später deren 6.

Als dieser Trupp sich an einer Brücke in der Nähe des Kultur- und Medienzentrums
Usine aufstellt, sammeln sich einige hundert Meter entfernt Neugierige,
angezogen von der Attraktion des grossen Polizeiaufgebotes. Die Mischung aus
Jugendlichen, Passanten und Anwohnern verhält sich ruhig und friedlich, etliche
Personen sitzen sich unterhaltend auf den Randsteinen.

Zwei freie Kameraleute, als Journalisten gekennzeichnet durch Presseausweise,
Kameras und eine neongelbe Signalweste mit dem Aufdruck ?PRESS?, gehen den
Polizisten entgegen. Auch die Polizei setzt sich in Richtung des
Menschenauflaufs in Bewegung.

Wenige Meter, bevor die Polizisten die beiden Journalisten passieren, schlittern
zwei oder mehr BeamtInnen 5-6 "Schockgranaten" über den Boden, in Richtung der
Kameraleute. Beiden gelingt es, von den explodierenden Granaten weg in Deckung
zu rennen. Der Polizeikonvoi bewegt sich ohne Halt weiter auf den
Menschenauflauf zu. Der Fusstrupp, aus dem heraus mit den Granaten geworfen
wurde, zeigt kein weiteres gesteigertes Interesse für die Kameraleute. Neben dem
Konvoi, hinter den Fusstruppen, laufen weitere Neugierige und einige
Journalisten. Die Polizei beginnt, ohne Vorwarnung grosse Mengen Tränengas und
Schockgranaten gegen die Ansammlung einzusetzen. Die Leute stieben auseinander

Laut einem/einer weiteren ZeugIn gingen die BeamtInnen "grundsätzlich" mit den
Granaten "umsichtig um". Es wurde jedoch wiederum beobachtet, wie "eine Granate
bewusst in Richtung einer Gruppe (weglaufender) Journalisten/Fotografen geworfen
wurde".

Sacramento: Proteste gegen Biotech-Tagung der WTO gehen weiter - Fotos

In Sacramento findet derzeit eine WTO-Ministerial-Konferenz "on Food and
Agriculture" statt. Seit 4 Tagen befindet sich Sacramento im Ausnahmezustand.
Trotz der heftigen Repression geht der Protest weiter. Mehrere tausend Menschen
veranstalten seit vergangenen Samstag Aktionstage gegen das Treffen der
WTO-Mitglieder. Die Repression seitens der Staatsmacht hat für viele
überraschende Ausmaße angenommen. Massenverhaftungen, Einkesslungen, Schläge,
Elektroschocks, Gummigeschosse, Pfeffergas, Medienhetze sind die Reaktion auf
nicht erwünschten Widerspruch.
Am Montag beteiligten etwa 3000 Menschen an einer unglaublich bunten und
energiegeladenen Demonstration. Immer wieder kam es zu grundlosen Angiffen und
Misshandlungen seitens der Staatsmacht. Nach der Demonstration kam es bis in die
Nacht hinein im gesamten Stadtgebiet zu brutalen Übergriffen und Verhaftungen.
Auch am Dienstag setzte sich die Gewalt-Strategie fort. Bereits vor der ersten
Demonstration gab es am Convergence Center mehrere Verhaftungen. Die
Demonstration zog im Polizeispalier zum Gerichtsgebäude. Am Nachmittag fanden
zahlreiche weitere Aktionen statt....

According to their legal counsel, the four arrestees from the Community Garden
lock-down on Sunday night were arraigned before a judge today. Three of them
have been cited but not released. The fourth has still given no information so
has not yet been cited.

24-06-2003 18:34: Police fail in attempt to surround activists
Motorcycle and bicycle cops attempted to surround a small group of activists a
block away from the Welcome Center, and failed. Like angry bees, they buzzed up
to the intersection of 12th and C and then left. Cheers went up in the Welcome
Center parking lot, and calls of "Fuck the Pigs!"

A caller to Sacramento Resistance Radio reports that activists have been told to
leave the parking lot because it is state property and is reserved for "special
vehicles". "I guess wea`re not special vehicles," the caller said, with
sarcastic resignation.

dropped, the police re-arrested her, so they could keep her longer and make up
new bogus charges

Swat teams are amassing and are surrounding people who value community and like
gardening. There has been a call to disperse issued by police. It doesn`t look
like there are enough people to hold their position.
People are linking arms. Police are announcing that if people get in the park,
it`s private park, and they`ll be arrested. People have been doing a good job at
not getting boxed in and are still drumming and practicing the art of

About 100 activists trying to save the Ron Mandella Community Garden have taken
their struggle to the owners of the garden, employing in a roving protest headed
on 14th from T, approaching Q. They are being surrounded by police! They need
your support! Especially cameras at 14th & Q-T !!

24-06-2003 17:07: First activist has been removed at U-C Davis lock-down
The activist has been loaded into a police cruiser. All sorts of cutting devices
have been seen. Activists are happy about the education opportunities they are
having with the campus staff and students about the dangers of GE trees, and are
vowing to stop this desecration of nature and perversion of science.

24-06-2003 17:04: Police refusing anyone to observe the removal of locked-down
activists at U-C Davis sculpture
Lt. Hartley is refusing to let any observers to watch the activists be removed
from the sculpture by the fire department. In fact, besides pushing people back,
authorities have erected a screen to block the view. Officers had at first
accepted offer from sculpture sitters to come down and be let free, but
rescinded it. This choice by the police will certainly cost the City of Davis
and the University much more money than if they had kept with their original,
reasonable agreement. What are the police planning that they must block the
public`s view?

24-06-2003 16:31: Fire Department to remove sculpture-sitters?
Police refused to allow the legal representative to stay inside, and threatened
use of chemical weapons. The two activists hanging in the sculpture offered to
come down if they could walk away, and though one officer said that was okay, it
now appears that the Fire Department is going to forcibly remove them.

24-06-2003 16:24: Riot cops at the U-C Davis lock-down
Police have cleared the Life Sciences building of most of the people who were
inside supporting (including medical and legal), and have pushed everyone back
from it. Nine riot police have arrived and have assaulted at least one observer.
One of them is videotaping. Some of their names are: Dunn, Wilson, Hogan and
Murphy.

At 16 & P there appear to be 4 CA hwy patrol carriers with about 30 hwy patrol
people ready to intimidate and deter the activists at the community garden.

According to an IMC reporter, there are "hundreds of cops" at the courthouse
where 200 supporters have converged to show solidarity and support for red red,
the Portland activist who`s arraignment is inside.

has her felony arraignment today. However, in complete defiance of the law, none
of them are being allowed to enter to witness her public hearing.

7th & I: Protesters are marching down 7th from I to H. Lots of people are
watching. Bicycle cops are escorting people on sidewalks. The protesters are
chanting in support of our jailed comrade. Folks are needed to come down and

...in parking area just south of it.

Word from someone who just came in off the street: There`s at least 4 people
being arrested in front of the Convention Center at 15th & J. No one is there,
though. There`s only about 25 people in the area but they`re around the corner
and being penned in by officers in full riot gear. Not a great situation for our
people there.

- G8 PROTESTS, June 1-3

Free Movement and Free Information was the slogan of the first major protest
against the G8 summit in Evian on Friday, May 30. Throughout the day, symbolic
actions illustrated the connections between both demands.

From the early morning hours of the main anti-G8 protest day, June 1, cheerful
crowds had blockaded bridges and streets and engaged in various protests across
the region around Evian. Police made mass arrests and went in with heavy use of
teargas, rubber bullets and concussion granades, injuring many people. The G8
summit was delayed for a couple of hours, while up to 100,000 took to the streets.
