Riot police in the Philippines have used batons to stop more than 500 anti-World Trade Organization demonstrators trying to march on the presidential palace in the capital, Manila.
They were protesting against the world trade meeting taking place in Mexico.
Reuters news agency says the activists, mainly farmers, students and urban poor, had initially been allowed to march from the United States embassy to the palace.
However, about 24 riot police prevented the protesters from leaving an area in central Manila.
