Here are some informations about the current situation in Genua as experienced by a few inidividuals working around the Tute Bianche (TB) and the social centre Terra di Nessuno (land of Nosuno). There are many other groups working on preparations but this is where we landed and are welcome. Things change fast so check out for new updates coming in.
ATMOSPHERE OF REPRESSION:
On Wednesday, an appartment where several activists from the TB were staying was raided by the police. Official reason : look for weapons. The TB reacted pretty well, as they were having a press conference near by they moved immediately to the appartment surprising the civil police in the middle of its work with cameras and fotographers. The news made it to front page local newspapers "the anegr of the tute bianche" :.." the State begins the confrontation" clearly showing the illigitimate and authoritarian act of the government. OF course the police found nothing but dirty socks, papers and old pasta.
The police has started being very present in the streets of Genova. According to information in the newspapers, the police is making about 1200 individual identity controls per day. In the evenings there are not that many people out in the streets as would be usual for these time of the tear. All small street sellers and dealers have moved away just to give u an idea. A group of 20 students that was doing a small action involving a press conference were all stopped on their way to the pc and checked. The State is trying to put psychological pressure and create a mood of tension, but people have remained cool and are carefulkly thinking about the ways to well counter these moves. Lawyers and legal observers are being organised.

In Napel there was a demonstration mainly organised by the NoGlobal spectrum which was strongly involved in the protests against the OECD back in march. The demo was because the Eurovision (the ferry boat in whicvh the G8 summit will take place ) was in the harbour of Napoli. There was a symbolic act of people trying to get in and hand a letter over to the captain of the boat asking him not to host the meeting and so on. The police seems to have over reacted and there are rumours about 1 person being in hospital, but we don't have clear info about what hapenned. Check out italy.indymedia.org.
SPACES:
Very unclear situation. As you know the government only recently started garanteeing spaces for the activities / accodmodation etc. The situation changes on a day to day basis which makes the organising extremely difficult, but this is roughly the situation : the government wants to divide the city along an west / east zone. (The city is long and thin spread along the coast). The west for official G8 activities and red zone, and the east as the playground for protestors. The spaces in the Eastern part will be secured from July 15th-22nd. The division of the city begins roughly speaking east and west of the second train station (not the main one). By the coast, close to the 2nd train station , there is a huge parking lot (about 4 football fields) which will be one of the key spaces. There is space for 20.000 people here according to the organisers. There will be a concert on Thursday here. An infopoint, a few large tents for the public forum, sound system for large plenaries etc. Very near by there are two schools which will include space for meetings and preparing activities, a press centre, computer access, printing facilities etc - but NO sleeping place. There are other schools and parks very likely to be used but until yesterday eveing there was no clear information about their use. But in all cases bringing tents along is a good thing to do ! More infos soon.
The situation around the 9-15th of July is unclear.
Most people organise around the Social Centre Terra di Nosuno (land of noone). There is some infrastructure here : kitchen, camping space, computer etc). The SC is about 15 minutes from the centre. Take bus no35 (not 35 slash because it'll take u to the mountains) at the principal square in front of the pharmacy. Get off at the stadium Lagacchio. It's in the west of the city !
Preserving space in the west is seen as key by some people, especially taking into accoun the action of civil disobedience planned by the tute bianche (see below). Others think that thi space could too easily be isolated (like the school in Goeteborg) and that we should move into the east. There will be a decision on this soon. This depends also on other groups i.e a grassroots trade union (the only one) that is planning to march on the 20th through the west side, othe groups trying to get spaces in the west.
Action on July 20th.
This is mostly being coordinated by the tute bianche and the idea if to commit civil disobedience by enterinmg the red zone. In several italian cities there are public trainings taking place for this action. The tb count on several thousnd people taking part. The idea is affinity groups / clusters can spread along the red zone limitation (there will be fences in several parts a la Quebec see below). The coordination among these affinitiy groups will happen up until the very last moment in the common spaces (parking etc) and will depend very much on how the situation evolves up until then. So if the western part is not secured, we will be all packed into the east which involves also more possible friction between the different political spectrums.
THE FENCE
There are concrete supports (2,50 m wide * 50 cm high) disposed around the city, ready to be used. A 2,50 m high metal fence can be fixed to each one of these concrete 'supports' and be put together making a large wall. We will make pictures and put the online soon.
TECHNICAL things:
- it is difficult to get gas masks. Bring some along. A lot if possible. It seems that it is not forbidden to carry them.
- Bring tents. It is likely to be the easiest way of accomodation.
- In some spots u may find a lot of moskitos. Repelent can be useful
- The weather is hot and humid.
Keep in mind things evolve on a daily basis, keep checking for more infos.
Organise as self sufficient as possible, remain flexible. Put political pressure on the Italian Government.
People are motivated and in a good mood. The italian political culture is an interesting experience for anyone!

update aus Genua und mehr (7.7.)
Die ItalienerInnen denken dass die Moeglichkeit besteht dass der Staat irgendetwas inszeniert. Im schlimmsten Fall einen Bombenanschlag oder so wie es oefters in den 70er passiert ist als die Autonomia Opereia Bewegung durch Repression niedergemacht wurde. Im Genua Social Forum wurde dies zum Teil diskutiert und die Leute sind irgendwie drauf vorbereitet falls es dazu kommen sollte. Es heisst im Netzwerk ruhig bleiben und keine Hysterie ausloesen. Wier gesagt nicht denken dass es kommt, aber dass die Moeglichkeit besteht sollte uns klarer sein. keine Panik ueber die Listen ausloesen. Ich wollte euch aber auf dem Luafenden halten.
Update aus Genua Freitag 7. Juli 2001
Hier einige Informationen zum aktuellen Stand der Situation in Genua von einigen Menschen die vor Ort sind, hauptsaechlich aus der Sicht der Tute Bianche und des Centrro Sociale terra di Nosuno. Alles aendert sich ziemlich schnell, achtet also auf zukunftige updates.
REPRESSIVE STIMMUNG :
Gestern wurde eine Wohnung wo sich mehrere AktivistInnen der Tute Bianche (tb) aufgehalten haben von der Polizei durchsucht. Grund : Suche nach Waffen ! Die TB haben gut druaf reagiert und die zeitgliech zur Hausdruchsuchung laufende Pressekonferenz prompt in die Wohnung verlegt. So konnte die Polizei beim durchsuchen von der Presse dokumentiert werden. Gefunden haben sie natuerlich nichts. Heute war in erster Seite lokaler Zeitungen zu lesen "Die Wut der Tute Bianche", "Der Staat beginnt die Provokationen" und aehnlich.
Die Polizei ist sehr praesent. Zur Zeit machen sie, laut Zeitungen, etwa 1200 Personalienfestellungen pro Tag in der Stadt Genova. Abends sind nicht soviel Leute unterwegs wie ueblich fuer diese Zeit. Kleindealers und Straßenverkauefer sind alle weg. Etwa 20 Jugendliche aus einer Studentenorganisation wurden heute auf dem Weg zu einer Pressekonferenz alle von der Polizei abgefangen und kontrolliert. Sie kamen alle aus verschiedenen Richtungen zur PK. Der Staat will einschuechtern, psychologischen Druck ausueben und eine Stimmung des Ausnahmezustandes herstellen .Jedoch werden wir uns das nicht gefallen lassen und es werden Aktionen dazu vorbereitet. Legale BeobachterInnen und Anwaelte werden eingeschaltet.
In Neapel gab es heute eine Demo angeleitet von No Global, der Zusammenhang der im Maerz bereits die Proteste gegen die OECD getragen hatte. Anlass war dass die Eurovision (das Boot auf dem der G8 Gipfel gehalten wird) in Neapel im Hafen stand. Die Demo beinhaltete eine symbolische Aktion wie die Uebergabe eines Briefes an den Kaepten des Schiffes mit der Bitte er solle sich weigern, dass das Treffen dort abgehalten wird usw. Die Polizei ging sehr brutal mit der Demo vor. Es kam zu riots und Verletzte. Einer der Aktivisten von No Global der im Genua Social Forum aktiv ist liegt zur Zeit im Krankenhaus. Mehr Infos gab es heute abend nicht, aber auf italy.indymedia.org werden wohl mehr Details sein.
RAUEMLICHKEITEN:
Sehr unklar. Der Staat hat erst vor kurzem auf die Forderungen der AktivstInnen nachgegeben und es ergeben sich neue Sachen von Tag zu Tag was die Organisation sehr schwer macht. Aber grob siehts bislang so aus:
der Staat will eine Trennung West / Osten quer durch die Stadt machen (Genua ist lang und duenn - an der kueste entlang). Dh im Westen sollen die Gipfelaktivitaeten stattfinden (rote Zone) und im Osten (ungefaehr ab oestlich des zweiten Bahnhofes) ist das Reservat wo die Demonstraten sich austoben sollen. Rauemlichkeiten (alle im Osten) werden ab dem 15-22 Juli zugesagt. Gleich an der Kueste und nahe am 2. Bahnhof gibt es einen Riesenparkplatz (ca 4 Fussballfelder groß) der zur Verfuegung stehen wird. Hier soll am 18. Ein Konzert stattfinden, ein Infopoint aufgebaut werden und mehrere große Zelte fuer die Foren, Plenas etc. Platz ist hier fuer ca 20.000 Menschen nach Einschaetzungen der Organisatoren. Ganz nahe an diesem Parkplatz sind auch 2 Schulen die auch zur Verfuegung stehen. Hier soll Pressezentrum sein, Bueroraueme, Arbeitsraum etc (keine Unterkunft !). Dann gibt es mehrere andere Schulen, Parks und ein Stadium die sehr wahrscheinlich sind aber bis heute abend gab es noch nix genaues. Zelten scheint in vielen Faellen angesagt! Mehr Infos bald.
Besonders unklar ist der Zeitraum 9-15 Juli. Wird diskutiert. Die meisten Menschen organisieren sich um den Centro Soziale Terra di Nessuno (=Niemandsland). Hier gibt es einiges an Infrastruktur (Platz zum Zelten, Kueche, Buero). Der CS liegt im Westen ca 15 Minuten vom Zentrum mit dem Bus 35 entfernt. Von Piaza Principal - bei der Apotheke einsteigen, aber nicht in die (35 "/") sonst landet ihr aufm Berg ! 35 ohne Strich also.) Austeigen am Stadion Lagacchio.
Raum im Westen zu behalten wird von einigen als sehr wichtig angesehen, besonders hinsichtlich der geplanten Aktion der Tute Bianche (siehe unten). Andere denken eher dass der CS dann zu einfach isoliert wird (aehnlich wie die Schule in Goeteborg) und dass wir alle in den Osten umziehen solten. Es wird eine Entscheidung bald geben.
AKTION AM FREITAG 20. JULI
Ziviler Ungehorsam und Eindringen in die Rote Zone. Diese Aktion wird hauptsaechlich von den Tute Bianche geplant. In vielen Staedten Italiens laufen zur Zeit oeffentliche Trainigns fuer dieser Aktion, sie rechnen mit mehreren tausend Menschen. Die Idee ist aehnlich wie das Castor-Streckenkonzept, dh die Leute teilen sich der Roten Zone entlang (es wird an mehreren Stellen einen Zaun geben - mehr Infos unten) je nach Bezugsgruppen etc. Die Koordination fuer diese Aufteilung laueft in den Zelten dieses großen Parkplatzes und in den Schulen bis zum letzten Moment.
Fuer dieses Konzept ist eine "Umzinglung" der Roten Zone am besten und das bedeutet Zugang durch den Westen. Wenn der Westen jedoch auch zur roten Zone wird, dann werden wir alle intensiver in den Osten geballt sein, was auch mehr "Reibung" zwischen den verschiedenen Zusammenhaenge bedeutet.
DER ZAUN
An mehreren Stellen der Stadt stehen große 2,50m lange *50cm hohe Betonkloetze bereit auf denen ca 2,50 m hohe dichte Metal-Zauene fixiert werden, dazu noch eine Plane. Die Zauene haben 4 Bindungen rechts und links und werden so zu einer Zaunmauer zusammengestellt. Wir werden bald Bilder davon ins Netz stellen.
TECHNIX und Sonstiges
- Gasmasken sind hier sehr schwer zu besorgen . Bringt welche mit ! Viele am besten. Es ist wohl nicht verboten sie hier zu tragen.
- Zelte mitbringen! Es wird wohl die einfachste Unterkunftsmoeglichkeit sein.
- es gibt in verschiedenen Stellen viele Moskitos. Insektenschutzmittel ist hilfreich.
- das Wetter ist heiss und schwuel.
So weit erstmal. Wie gesagt die Situation aendert sich von Tag zu Tag, achtet also auf weitere Infos.
Organisiert euch so selbstgenuegend wie es geht.
Bleibt flexibel bis zum letzten Moment.
