I will not go to this Forum (i'm hard to travel, in spite of Porto Alegre is far only six hours by bus from the city i live, and i think i have nothing to do there). I think is a kind of 'social -democrat' - traditional institutionalized left gathering. Maybe if too many radical groups went to the gathering it will take another face, who knows...

Among the groups organizing it is MST (landless movement, probably the most radical and the only one that takes direct action as their way to change things), the brazilian ATTAC, The Brazilian Association of GNOs, the Brazilian Association of Enterpeuneters for Citizenship (sic), and CUT (the major central workers union, that is yelow despite the red in its flag).

If the purpose of this list is to search together for solutions and strategies to advance a pro-worker and pro-environment agenda in opposition to that of transnational corporate elites and their political lackeys, then I would like to suggest that we endeavor to find common political ground rather than criticize progressive approaches that may be insufficiently 'radical' for some subscribers.

The discussion of the World Social Forum is a case in point. Certainly, if the MST is involved, we should all give this process and forum the benefit of the doubt. But even if the CUT were the only organizers of the meeting, we should encourage them to proclaim a militant rejection of neo-liberalism and corporate rule and help them with their analysis in a collegial way.

We keep hearing 'revolutionaries' criticize 'reformists' and disparage their message and tactics; and this trend is only giving aid and comfort to the true enemies of working families and ecological sustainability — namely, corporate and political elites. A year ago, as we prepared to confront the WTO in Seattle, we resisted this perennial problem of the Left. That mobilization against globalization was historic, I would submit, as much as for the veneer of solidarity that we were able to maintain as for the actual blocking of the Ministerial meetings. Frankly, the latter depended on the former, if you see what I mean.

This suggested strategy of leftist comity, by the way, would exclude the 'Archibalds' of the world. That is, this discussion should remain progressive and internationalist; and those recent and frequent reactionary rants, about which several subscribers have fairly complained, have no place in this large and hopeful dialogue. O I Fórum Social Mundial será lançado em 5 de setembro em Porto Alegre, cidade que sediará a reunião entre os dias 25 e 30 de janeiro de 2001. A proposta de criar o Fórum Social Mundial decorre das mobilizações ocorridas na Europa contra o Acordo Multilateral de Investimentos (AMI) em 1998, das grandes manifestações em Seatlle, durante o encontro da Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMC) em novembro de 1999, e das realizadas recentemente em Washington, contra as políticas do Fundo Monetário Internacional (FMI) e do Banco Mundial. Essas mobilizações, e muitas outras, colocaram definitivamente em evidência a emergência de um movimento cívico além das fronteiras nacionais.

O Fórum Social Mundial será realizado todos os anos, a partir de 2001, simultaneamente ao Fórum Econômico Mundial, que ocorre em janeiro, em Davos, Suíça. Enquanto o Fórum Econômico Mundial tem cumprido um papel estratégico na formulação de políticas neoliberais, o Fórum Social Mundial reunirá representantes dos mais importantes setores da sociedade civil em nível internacional, que defendem os direitos humanos, a justiça social e a proteção do meio-ambiente.
