Superior court Lübeck has decided that
Safwan Eid is to be released from custody

04/07/96

The International Independent Commission demands:
The investigation of the Grevesmühlen suspects should be re-opened immediately.

The International Independent Commission note that the superior court Lübeck has decided that Safwan Eid is to be released from custody. By taking this decision the court has qualified the investigations presented by the public prosecutor so far as a collection of contradictions an speculations from which an urgent suspect cannot be constructed.

The IIC welcomes that by doing so the court has made a first and overdue step to create a climate which allows the truth to be detected.

In the face of a tragedy in which ten people were killed an 38 others injured, people who came into this country in search of a refuge, in the face that make arson and hence murder very likely, it is certainly impossible to simply proceed to the ordinary agenda now.

The courts decisions a demand to do whatever possible to investigate this tragedy with objectivity an even-handedness an to call the guilty to account. To act otherwise would be something that we, as well as the public opinion in our countries would be unable to understand.

The IIC repeats, therefore, the recommendations already made on June 23:
