Campaign against Fire in the Garments Sector
Fire in garment factories is a tragedy for garment workers and garment sector.
Every year there are some fires in garments and many workers are killed or injured. On 8th August' 2001 there was a fire in garment named Micro Swatter in Kafrul in Dhaka city. In that fire incident 26 garment workers were killed and near 100 were injured.
NGWF organized a Black Flag Procession against the fire incident and killing in Dhaka city on 10th August' 2001. From that rally the federation demanded compensation to each killed as tk. 200.000/ and necessary treatment for the injured workers. To strengthen the demand, the federation organized another Rally with Red Flag on 24th August. From the second rally, the federation warned the BGMEA and concerned owners to fullfill the demand. After that, the BGMEA and factory owner compensated tk. 100.000/ for each killed workers and took necessary steps for the treatment of injured workers.
