PHOENIX

Monday, 11/15/99

It's a mixed group of activists who organize meetings for us at Arizona State University. Ray E. Short, a writer and a member of the World Federalist Association speaks about the concept of Global Governance. World Federalists are trying to implement a law in the United Nations that allows to punish individuals accused of genocide or crime against humanity. This provokes a discussion about the hegemony of northern countries in these institutions. "New World Order is just a new name for colonialism", says Ibe >from the indigenous Kuna Movement in Panama. "Free trade is just another type of colonialism. The UN never looked out for oppressed people. For example: only rich countries constitute the Security Council. So when Panama was invaded, this happened by the same powers that form the Security Council. So they didn't react. We as indigenous people fight for our self-determination. We have 500 years of struggle - and we will continue to struggle!" Guido from Bolivia added: "No Indigenous are represented in the United Nations. And besides only governments are represented in the UN, but governments don't represent the people."

From 5 to 9 p.m. we have a teach-in on the WTO in the Memorial Unions building, organized by the Phoenix Education Council. It's been a success, so what to say? Why not step on the corridor in between and listen to Mirror. Mirror is using is knowledge and understanding of Mayan philosophy and wisdom, to tell each one of us what are our strengths and what we still have to learn from each other. Thanks to Mirror!
